Looking for the best nose hair trimmer? We’ve tested a range of popular models to find the highest rated and most recommended options for men, including trimmers that can also tackle ear hair, eyebrows and sideburns with ease.
Our in-depth testing goes further than others, assessing trimming performance, comfort, cleaning, battery life and durability. Prices range from less than £10 to more than £40, with well-known brands such as Philips, Manscaped and Wahl in the mix.
We've found two Best Buys that are easy to use and comfortable to hold, as well as one Great Value option that punches well above its price.
How our tests find you the best
Satisfaction of trim
A good trim should be quick, tidy, and painless. Our testers rated how satisfied they were with the final look and feel after using each model.
Ease of use and cleaning
Every trimmer can technically remove hair. But does it tug? Is it comfortable? Can you actually clean it? These are the things we care about.
Durability
Ever dropped a trimmer on a tiled floor? We have - but on purpose. Our drop tests reveal which models can take a knock and which break at the first fall.
We also test...
We also check battery life, noise levels, and how it handles ear hair, leaving nose stone unturned.

How we test nose hair trimmers
Nose and ear hair trimmers are simple tools, but that doesn’t mean they’re all equally effective. We test them thoroughly to find out which ones trim well, feel comfortable and are built to last.
We regularly revisit the nose hair trimmers on sale to see if any new or popular models need testing – and when we find them, we do.
User panel testing
We recruited a panel of three volunteers to put each trimmer through its paces. Over several weeks, they tried every model as their hair grew back, giving us honest, no-nonsense feedback. It wasn’t glamorous work, but someone had to do it.
Each panel member scored every trimmer on four key areas:
- Comfort and ease of use How comfortable the trimmer felt, whether it tugged, and how easy it was to handle and operate.
- Ease of cleaning How straightforward it was to rinse, open or maintain each trimmer after use.
- Satisfaction with nose trimming Whether the trimmer gave a thorough, even cut in the nostrils without needing multiple passes.
- Satisfaction with ear trimming How well the trimmer performed around the ear area, including any issues with fit or control.
This panel testing formed the backbone of our scores, helping us identify trimmers that were genuinely easy and comfortable to use.
Noise level

Having something vibrate next to your eardrum is never going to be serene, but some trimmers are a lot quieter than others. We used a decibel meter to measure how loud each model is from 2cm away (roughly ear-to-trimmer distance).
Durability

Bathrooms are full of hard surfaces and we want to know if a trimmer will survive a knock, so that’s why we:
- Drop each trimmer five times from 1.5 metres onto a hard floor.
- Check for any functional damage, cracks or parts that come loose.
- Score each model based on how well it holds up and whether it still works properly.
Battery life
Battery life varies between models. Although battery life doesn't factor into our test scores for nose hair trimmers, to make sure we'd sniff out any with pitifully short runtimes we:
- Fully charged each rechargeable trimmer, or used fully topped-up rechargeable batteries for battery-operated ones.
- Then ran them continuously in cutting mode until they stopped, recording those runtimes.
These runtimes were undoubtedly longer than you'd get in real-world use, as the blades weren't encountering any resistance while running, but we don't think any of our tested models will die halfway through a tidy-up.
Why you can trust us: at Which? we're free from manufacturer and retailer influence. Find out more about our impartiality and how your support helps us to stay editorially independent
How to use a nose hair trimmer
Using a nose hair trimmer is thankfully quick and painless, or at least it should be. Here's how to do it safely and effectively:
- Start with clean, dry nostrils A trimmer works best when there's no moisture, snot or debris in the way. Give your nose a gentle blow and wipe before you begin.
- Use a mirror and good lighting You don’t need surgical precision, but being able to see what you’re doing helps avoid missed patches or accidental prodding.
- Insert the trimmer gently Don't jam it in; the goal is to trim visible hair just inside the nostril, not go spelunking. Tilt your head back slightly and angle the trimmer to reach around the inner edge.
- Move it slowly and steadily Let the trimmer do the work. A few slow circular motions inside the nostril are usually enough to tidy things up.
- Clean the trimmer after each useRinse or brush out any hair clippings and let it dry thoroughly before putting it away. A clean trimmer is less likely to tug.
Can a nose trimmer be used on ear hair?

Yes. Most nose trimmers are also designed to tackle ear hair and many do it well. In fact, we test for that specifically. Just keep in mind:
- Use the same gentle approachYou’re trimming the outer ear and just inside the opening – never push the trimmer deep into the ear canal.
- Hold the ear steadyIt helps to gently pull your ear back and up to flatten the surface for a smoother trim.
- Expect more noiseIt’s right by your eardrum, so even quiet trimmers can sound loud while using them. If you're sensitive to sound, avoid models we’ve reviewed with 'Louder than other trimmers' as a listed con.'
Using one trimmer for both jobs is totally fine – just give it a quick clean in between areas, for obvious reasons.
Is it safe to cut nose hair?
Yes, it’s safe to cut nose hair, but you don't need to remove it all.
Nose hair actually serves a useful purpose, trapping dust, dirt and other unwelcome particles before they make their way further into your respiratory system. So while it’s smart to tidy up any that are hanging out and making an appearance, you definitely don’t need to remove all of it.
To keep things safe, use a trimmer or scissors specifically designed for nose hair. Never use tweezers, which can nick the sensitive skin inside your nose or cause ingrown hairs.
Only trim the hair you can see. If it’s sticking out it’s fair game, but anything further up should be left to do its job. Remember to clean the trimmer after use; a quick rinse and dry helps prevent a build up of bacteria.
What is the best way to remove nose hair?

The best way to remove nose hair is with a dedicated electric nose hair trimmer. It’s the safest, easiest and most sensible option if you're simply looking to tidy up strays without affecting your body’s natural filters.
You could instead – and readers with particularly firm follicles might find this more effective – use scissors, but ensure you have a steady hand and are using specially designed scissors with rounded tips, as you'll be running the risk of poking or nicking the delicate skin inside of your nose.
You should never use tweezers to remove the hair from the root, as this can lead to ingrown hairs or infection, and it's also best to avoid waxing (unless done by a professional).
Ladies nose hair trimmers

All the trimmers we tested were marketed for men, but there’s no real difference in how they work. Women’s versions usually just have a slimmer design or different colour scheme. Nobody needs a gender-specific model – any well-designed trimmer will do the job just as well.
