Is A dissection Painful? ›

Most aortic dissections occur because high blood pressure causes the artery's wall to deteriorate. People have sudden, excruciating pain, most commonly across the chest but also in the back between the shoulder blades. Doctors do imaging studies to confirm the diagnosis.

When an aortic dissection occurs, you may experience symptoms similar to those of a heart attack: Pain: You may experience sudden severe pain in the chest, back or abdomen. A radiating pain in the chest or upper back is described as a tearing or ripping sensation.

Acute type A aortic dissection (AAD) is a life-threatening emergency that carries a high mortality rate without surgical treatment [1,2]. Surgical mortality has been estimated to range from 9% to 30%, and survival rates of 51–82% at 5 years have been reported [3–9].

About 40% of patients die immediately from complete rupture and bleeding out from the aorta. The risk of dying can be as high as 1% to 3% per hour until the patient gets treatment. Surgeons remove as much of the dissected aorta as possible and stop blood from leaking into the aortic wall. A synthetic tube (graft) is used to reconstruct the aorta. If the aortic valve leaks as a result of the damaged aorta, it may be replaced at the same time. The new valve is placed within the graft.

In addition to the dangers of desensitizing students to the suffering of living beings, animal dissection often exposes them to harmful chemicals, such as formaldehyde and formalin .
